Quality Compassionate Health Care

Abortion Services around Rapid City, South Dakota

Family Planning Associates Medical Group (FPA) proudly provides compassionate, high-quality abortion care for patients traveling from Rapid City, South Dakota. For nearly thirty years, FPA has served individuals from across the Midwest, offering safe and timely abortion services with no waiting period and appointments available Monday through Saturday.

Many patients travel from South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska to receive comprehensive reproductive healthcare at FPA. Our services include STI screening, contraception consultations with or without an exam, IUD insertion, first-trimester surgical abortion, medication abortion up to 13 weeks, and second-trimester abortion procedures up to 24 weeks.

As abortion restrictions have expanded across the United States, FPA has adapted to ensure patients from out of state—particularly from regions with highly restrictive laws such as South Dakota—can still access safe and timely abortion care. Many states require mandatory waiting periods, parental consent, or impose barriers that prevent early access. In Illinois, there are no waiting periods, meaning you can receive care without unnecessary delays.

How does the Abortion Pill work?

More than half of all abortions in the U.S. are completed using medication—commonly known as the abortion pill. This method is extremely effective and safer than many everyday medications, including penicillin and Tylenol.

Medication abortion uses two FDA-approved medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, to safely end an early pregnancy at home. It is a non-surgical alternative available in early pregnancy.

Day 1 – Office Visit

During your visit, you will have an ultrasound, lab work, and a medical evaluation. After reviewing and signing consent forms, you will take mifepristone in our office and receive clear instructions for completing the process at home.

Day 2–3 – At Home

After 24–48 hours, you will take misoprostol at home. Cramping and bleeding are expected as your body passes the pregnancy. Some patients experience nausea, diarrhea, or fatigue. Pain and nausea medications are provided for comfort.

Follow-Up Plan

A few days after your visit, you will receive a text message reminding you to complete a brief self-assessment. If bleeding is minimal or if anything feels unusual, contact us right away. At five weeks, you will take the pregnancy test provided during your visit.

Our medical team is available 24/7, year-round to address questions or concerns, ensuring you always have support.

First Trimester In-Office Abortion Care Information – Rapid City, SD

If you are traveling from Rapid City, help is always available.

A first-trimester abortion (D&C) is performed within the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. The physician gently dilates the cervix and uses light suction to empty the uterus.
